The Yorkshire Terrier started out as a working dog in the mills and mines of northern England, but by the late 1800s it had moved from the factory floor onto the laps of fashionable Victorian ladies. The coat has its own small surprise: Yorkie puppies are born black and tan, and the steel blue and gold of the adult dog only comes in as they grow up.
