The Doberman is named after a person. In the town of Apolda, Germany, in the late 1800s, Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann worked as a tax collector and also ran the local dog pound. He wanted a dog that was fast, alert and loyal enough to keep him company on his rounds, and the breed that grew from his dogs carried his name. The American Kennel Club recognized the Doberman Pinscher in 1908. The result is a lean, athletic body, a quick mind and a habit of following its person everywhere, which is why owners call them velcro dogs.
