Pugs have been companion dogs for a very long time. The breed comes from ancient China, where short-faced dogs were kept by emperors, and Dutch traders brought pugs to Europe in the 1500s. In the Netherlands the breed is tied to the House of Orange, after a pug named Pompey is said to have raised the alarm when assassins approached William the Silent in 1572. The Latin motto often attached to the breed, "multum in parvo," means a lot in a little. The American Kennel Club recognized the pug in 1885.
