Size guide

Johannes Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring in Delft around 1665. It is not a portrait of a known person but a tronie, the Dutch name for a study of a face, a type or an expression. For about two centuries almost nobody paid attention to it. In 1881 a collector bought it at an auction in The Hague for a couple of guilders, and after his death in 1902 it went to the Mauritshuis museum in the same city, where it still hangs. Today people call it the Mona Lisa of the North.

What makes the painting work is the moment: a young woman turns over her shoulder, lips slightly open, as if someone just said her name. Dogs do that look all day, which is why it fits them so well. Each design here keeps the blue and gold turban falling down the back, the yellow-brown jacket, the white collar, the dark background and, of course, the single pearl, now hanging from a dog's ear. Most read "Quiet Luxury, Loud Eyes," a nod to big expressive eyes on a perfectly calm face. A Beagle, an English Bulldog and a Golden say "Pearls Before Small Talk" instead.

There are 20 breeds, from a Chihuahua and a Pomeranian to a Great Dane and a Doberman whose ears stand straight up through the turban. The painting is in the public domain; these are our own new drawings in its style, not copies of the museum piece.

Every design here is printed on our Washed Tee: 100% cotton, 250 gsm, washed vintage finish, relaxed unisex fit, S to 5XL, three colors per design, printed in the USA. 2 or more tees ship free in the US, and 3 or more get 15% off automatically.
