The Pomeranian is named after Pomerania, a region on the Baltic coast that is now part of Poland and Germany, and it descends from much larger spitz dogs that pulled sleds and herded sheep. Queen Victoria fell for small Poms in the late 1800s and helped shrink the breed to the size we know today: the American Kennel Club standard, set after it recognized the breed in 1888, calls for a dog of 3 to 7 pounds. What did not shrink was the spitz confidence. Every Pom owner lives with a sled dog's attitude packed into a powder puff.

The volume: "Output Exceeds Housing," a bark that blows the speaker apart. The ego: "Small Monument," "The Little Sovereign," "The Grand Arrival," "After You" and "Room for Two." The owner leaving the house: "Wait." The day's end: "Off Duty" and "Fin Pom." And the classics with a Pom in charge: the Mona Lisa, The Scream, The Creation of Adam, Uncle Sam and Dogs Playing Poker.
