The Great Dane is German, not Danish. The breed was developed in Germany to hunt wild boar, and Germans still call it the Deutsche Dogge. The American Kennel Club recognized it in 1887, and its standard asks for males of at least 30 inches at the shoulder. Somewhere along the way the boar hunter turned into one of the gentlest house dogs there is, a dog that leans its full weight on your legs, believes it fits on any chair and cannot understand why the coffee table keeps losing things when it wags.
