The Boston Terrier almost had a different name. Around 1889 a group of about thirty Boston owners formed a club and called their dogs American Bull Terriers, and some people simply called them round heads. Bulldog and Bull Terrier fanciers objected, so in the early 1890s the club settled on the name Boston Terrier, after the city where the breed was developed. Whatever the name, the Boston is a people dog, happiest right next to its person.
